WD My Cloud : Design Review

WD My Cloud : Design Review

The WD My Cloud is a hybrid range of external hard drives ranging from 2TB to 4TB , and is in a competition with NAS and Cloud Based storage services like Google Drive .

So what does it means ?

It means that , WD My Cloud is like your personal cloud storage with no other company involved , and providing much bigger allowances than Cloud Storage services at a fraction of price .

In this post we will cover mostly the Hardware part and will try to cover the software part in detail soon .

If you're a gamer and need an external HDD read our review of : WD My Passport X a Pricey Gaming Passport

Design and Hardware :

The basic design of My Cloud , comes from WD My Book hard drives .
The design as a whole is totally not bad at all.

As you can see in the images provided , the design includes round corners , white color thus providing a clean , elegant and minimalist finishing overall.

Dimensions : 170.6 x 49 x 139.3mm
Weight : 960g

So the design and size is no bigger than WD My Book which is a good thing .

The top and rear has "Metal" vents , which in turn helps to keep your drives quiet and cool.

On front you will see a power led which also works for displaying other operations like setting up of the drive itself  , along with that , you can find WD logo with My Cloud written on a Textured grey strip.

WD My Cloud : Design Review The top as you can see , and as we told earlier too , has mock-metal vents , and we can actually see some components through it , vents are larger , heat dissipation is hence much better .

Similarly , vents at the rear , they are smaller in size , and along with vents , all those communication ports and power port can be found. Which are : USB 3.0 port , to extend your cloud storage by adding extra Hard Drives , an Ethernet port , Reset Button , DC adapter port and a K Lock .

Now at the bottom , you will find info like , MAC Address printed along with serial no. and other information , along with vents , so that's much keeping your drive cooler and quiet .

Size Comparison :

WD My Cloud : Design Review So for fun we thought of comparing the size of WD My Cloud with a iPhone 6 .

As you can see , WD My Cloud , in terms of height is almost 2 inches larger than iPhone 6.
So through this fun comparison of ours , we know that its not that bigger in size , so you can just pop it in a place , set it up and forget it completely ( but not really ) .

In terms of hardware and design , WD My Cloud is really a compact one , and since its not meant to be portable , the non rigidness of the design is insignificant factor .
